Higher in conscientiousness
People higher in conscientiousness tend to plan ahead, finish what they start, and keep track of the details. Structure feels like relief rather than constraint, and other people tend to find them reliable.
Lower in conscientiousness
People lower in conscientiousness tend to work more spontaneously and stay loose about plans. That flexibility is genuinely useful when things change quickly, and it often comes with a tolerance for improvising that highly structured people find difficult.
Neither end is the good one
It is tempting to read one side of a personality scale as the healthy side. That is not how these traits work. Each end carries its own strengths and its own costs, and which one serves you better depends entirely on the situation you are in. A trait is a description of how you tend to operate, not a score on how well you are doing.
Traits also move over a lifetime. Where you land today is a snapshot, not a sentence.
The statements that measure it
Conscientiousness is scored from these 10 statements. 6 count toward a higher score and 4 are reverse-scored.
- Am always prepared.
- Leave my belongings around.reverse-scored
- Pay attention to details.
- Make a mess of things.reverse-scored
- Get chores done right away.
- Often forget to put things back in their proper place.reverse-scored
- Like order.
- Avoid my responsibilities.reverse-scoredReworded for clarity. Originally “Shirk my duties.”
- Follow a schedule.
- Am precise and thorough in my work.Reworded for clarity. Originally “Am exacting in my work.”
We changed the wording of two statements because the original words were tripping people up. The IPIP explicitly permits editing item wording, and the original is shown above each one so you can see exactly what changed.
Reverse-scored statements count the other way round: agreeing with one lowers the score rather than raising it. Mixing them in is what stops someone who agrees with everything from scoring high on everything, and it is why a questionnaire like this cannot simply be eyeballed.
The other four traits
- Extraversion, where your energy comes from
- Agreeableness, how you orient toward other people
- Emotional Stability, how reactive you are to stress
- Openness to Experience, how you meet ideas and novelty
